Car Servicing and MOTs in Maidstone and West Malling: What It Costs and What You Actually Get in 2026
Reviewed by the Humphries & Parks service team, London Road, West Malling, Maidstone. Authorised Suzuki and Mitsubishi service agent since 1947.
The short answer
An MOT for a normal car in Maidstone cannot legally cost more than £54.85, because that is the DVSA maximum fee for a Class 4 vehicle, and there is no VAT on it. Servicing is where the real money sits: a manufacturer-standard full service on a family SUV runs from roughly £250 to £330 at published 2026 franchise prices, depending on model and engine.
The part almost nobody explains is this. Using an independent garage does not void your manufacturer warranty, but it can cost you a separate, longer warranty that only a franchised dealer can activate. Suzuki's Service Activated Warranty extends cover to up to 10 years or 100,000 miles, and it only renews when the car is serviced by a Suzuki service partner in line with Suzuki's own schedule. Save £60 on a service at a back-street garage, lose up to seven extra years of warranty. That is the trade nobody puts in the price comparison.
If you drive a Suzuki or a Mitsubishi in Kent, the sensible question is not "who is cheapest" but "what am I giving up for the saving".
How much does a car service cost in Maidstone in 2026?
There is no fixed national price for a service, because "a service" is not one thing. It is a tiered menu, and the tier you need depends on age, mileage and what the manufacturer's schedule says.
Mitsubishi publishes its Three Diamond Service prices openly, which makes it one of the few real reference points for UK franchise servicing costs. These are the manufacturer's 2026 published figures for out-of-warranty vehicles:
Model | Oil & filter | Interim | Full | Major |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Mirage | £120 | £185 | £230 | £310 |
ASX Petrol | £135 | £185 | £250 | £340 |
Outlander Petrol | £135 | £195 | £250 | £320 |
Eclipse Cross | £150 | £200 | £260 | £375 |
ASX Diesel | £160 | £210 | £290 | £360 |
Outlander Diesel | £160 | £230 | £300 | £375 |
Outlander PHEV | £160 | £230 | £300 | £375 |
Shogun Sport | £160 | £230 | £310 | £420 |
L200 | £160 | £250 | £330 | £390 |
Shogun | £190 | £260 | £330 | £440 |
Source: Mitsubishi Motors UK, Three Diamond Service pricing, 2026. Service intervals across the range are 12,500 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first.
Two things are worth pulling out of that table. First, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions of the same car cost more to service than the petrol, typically £25 to £50 more per visit. Second, the gap between an oil and filter change and a major service is roughly threefold, so "how much is a service" is an unanswerable question until someone has checked your mileage and your service history.
Suzuki does not publish a single national price list in the same way, because costs vary by model and by the specific schedule item due. A Suzuki dealer will quote against your registration and your last stamp. What Suzuki does publish is a Service Plan, which fixes parts and labour prices for the term of the plan, and dealer interest-free finance covering service and MOT work, repairs, parts and accessories.
What this means for you in practice: ask for a written quote against your registration number, not a generic price, and ask which schedule item is actually due. A car booked in for a "full service" when the schedule calls for an interim is an expensive misunderstanding.
How much is an MOT in Maidstone and West Malling?
The MOT test fee is capped by law. The DVSA maximum for a car with up to 8 passenger seats, a motor caravan or a goods vehicle up to 3,000kg is £54.85, and you do not pay VAT on the fee.
Vehicle type | DVSA class | First MOT due at | Maximum fee |
|---|---|---|---|
Car (up to 8 passenger seats) | 4 | 3 years | £54.85 |
Motor caravan | 4 | 3 years | £54.85 |
Dual purpose vehicle | 4 | 3 years | £54.85 |
Goods vehicle up to 3,000kg | 4 | 3 years | £54.85 |
Goods vehicle 3,000kg to 3,500kg | 7 | 3 years | £58.60 |
Taxi or ambulance | 4 | 1 year | £54.85 |
Motorcycle over 200cc | 2 | 3 years | £29.65 |

That cap is the ceiling, not the going rate. Plenty of test stations charge below it, and many bundle the test with a service at a reduced combined price. The cap has not moved since 2010, which is why MOT testing on its own is close to a loss leader for most garages. What varies enormously is the repair work quoted afterwards, and that is where you should be comparing.
Important: the £54.85 covers the test only. It does not cover a retest after repairs, and it does not cover any work needed to pass.
When is my MOT due, and how early can I book it?
Your car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its registration date, then annually after that.
You can get an MOT up to one calendar month minus a day before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. If your MOT expires on 15 May, the earliest you can test it without losing days is 16 April. Test it earlier than that and your new expiry becomes one year minus a day from the test date, so you quietly lose part of a year's certificate.
You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT. The only exceptions are driving to or from somewhere for repairs, or to a pre-arranged MOT test. You also cannot renew vehicle tax while the MOT has expired.
Does using an independent garage void my warranty?
No, and this is the single most misunderstood point in car servicing.
Under the Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Order 2023, which came into force on 1 June 2023 and runs to 2029, a manufacturer cannot make your standard new car warranty conditional on servicing exclusively within its own franchised network. Competition and Markets Authority guidance published alongside the Order is clear that tying a warranty to the authorised network for work not covered by the warranty is likely to fall foul of competition law. Independent garages also have a right of access to the technical data, diagnostic information and training needed to work on modern vehicles, and can fit parts of matching quality.
Three conditions apply for the protection to hold:
The service follows the manufacturer's published schedule.
Parts used are of matching quality.
The work is properly recorded and documented.
So far, so reassuring. Here is the part that trips people up.
The Block Exemption protects your manufacturer warranty. It does not oblige a manufacturer to give you an extended warranty it offers as a benefit of franchised servicing. Those are two different things, and Suzuki's scheme is the clearest example in the UK market.
What is the Suzuki Service Activated Warranty, and how do you keep it?
Suzuki cars come with a 3 year or 60,000 mile manufacturer warranty. After that, Suzuki offers a Service Activated Warranty that can extend cover to up to 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.
The published terms are specific:
It applies to Suzuki cars under 10 years old and under 100,000 miles.
It activates on the first qualifying service after the manufacturer's warranty ends.
It runs for 12 months, or 9,000 to 12,500 miles if that comes sooner, with the mileage cap varying by the model's service interval.
It renews on each subsequent qualifying service, up to a maximum of 10 years from first registration or 100,000 miles.
A qualifying service is one carried out by a Suzuki service partner in accordance with the applicable Suzuki service interval.
A car without a full, up to date Suzuki service history gets an initial health check first, and any faults found are excluded from cover unless you pay to repair them during that qualifying service.
Read that last point twice. It is the expensive one. If you have spent three years at an independent garage and then decide you want the extended cover back, the pre-existing faults found at the health check are yours to fix at your own cost before cover applies.
The quotable version: a Suzuki owner who services outside the Suzuki network keeps their first three years of manufacturer warranty intact, but forfeits the years 4 to 10 Service Activated Warranty, and can only reinstate it by paying for a qualifying service plus any faults the health check finds.
Mitsubishi runs a comparable structure from a different angle: new Mitsubishi vehicles carry a 5 year or 62,500 mile warranty plus a 12 year anti-corrosion perforation warranty, with an extended option taking the mileage cap from 62,500 up to 125,000 within those five years.
Main dealer or independent garage: an honest comparison
Franchised dealer (Suzuki / Mitsubishi) | Good independent garage | |
|---|---|---|
Hourly labour rate | Higher | Typically lower |
Manufacturer warranty on a car under 3 years | Protected | Protected under Block Exemption 2023, if schedule and parts quality are met |
Suzuki Service Activated Warranty (years 4 to 10) | Activates and renews | Does not activate |
Parts | Genuine manufacturer parts | Matching quality parts permitted |
Technician training | Manufacturer-trained on your model | Varies by garage |
Software updates and recall work | Carried out, recalls free of charge | Usually referred back to a franchise |
Service stamp | Manufacturer stamp | Independent stamp |
Resale and part exchange value | Full main dealer history is the strongest evidence | Acceptable, but weaker at valuation |
Best suited to | Cars under 10 years old, or any car you plan to sell on | Older cars outside all warranty schemes |
The honest summary: if your car is over ten years old, outside every warranty scheme and you are keeping it until it dies, a trusted independent is a perfectly rational choice. If your car is inside the warranty window, or you intend to part exchange or sell it within a few years, the franchise route usually costs less over the life of the car than it appears to cost per visit.
That last point matters when you come to sell. A full manufacturer service history is one of the few documented things a buyer or a valuer can verify, and it shows up directly in what you are offered. If you are planning to move the car on, it is worth getting a valuation on your current car before you decide where to spend the next service.
Service versus MOT: what each one actually covers
These get confused constantly, and they do very different jobs.
MOT test | Service | |
|---|---|---|
Legal status | Legally required annually from 3 years old | Not legally required |
Purpose | Confirms the car meets minimum road safety and environmental standards on the day | Preventative maintenance to manufacturer schedule |
Typical checks | Brakes, tyres, lights, steering, suspension, emissions, structure, visibility | Oil and filters, fluids, brake wear, belts, plugs, diagnostics, wear items |
Replaces parts? | No, it inspects only | Yes, consumables replaced to schedule |
Fee | Capped at £54.85 for a car | Varies by model and service level |
Affects warranty? | No | Yes, a missed or non-qualifying service can break the chain |
An MOT pass is a snapshot, not a health certificate. A car can pass its MOT in the morning and need £700 of preventative work that afternoon, because the MOT is not testing the things a service is testing. Booking both together is usually the sensible move: it is one visit, one drop-off, and any advisories from the test can be quoted and fixed while the car is already on the ramp.
Five ways to cut servicing costs without losing cover
Spread it, do not skip it. Suzuki dealers offer interest-free finance on service and MOT work, repairs, parts and accessories, and Suzuki Service Plans fix parts and labour prices for the plan term so future price rises do not reach you. Mitsubishi service plans start from around £10 a month.
Book the MOT in the last month, not earlier. Testing more than a month minus a day early throws away part of a year's certificate.
Ask which schedule item is due. Paying for a major service when an interim is due is the most common avoidable overspend.
Bundle the MOT with the service. One visit, one courtesy arrangement, and advisories fixed before they become failures.
Do not let the history lapse. The cheapest way to keep a Suzuki's years 4 to 10 warranty is to never break the qualifying service chain in the first place. Reinstating it later costs more than maintaining it.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an MOT cost in Maidstone? No more than £54.85 for a standard car. That is the DVSA maximum fee for a Class 4 vehicle and there is no VAT on it. Many garages charge less than the cap, and combined service and MOT bookings are usually cheaper again. The fee covers the test only, not any repairs needed to pass.
Can I have my Suzuki serviced anywhere without voiding the warranty? Your 3 year or 60,000 mile manufacturer warranty is protected under the Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Order 2023, provided the service follows Suzuki's schedule, uses matching quality parts and is properly documented. However, Suzuki's Service Activated Warranty, which extends cover to up to 10 years or 100,000 miles, only activates and renews on a qualifying service carried out by a Suzuki service partner. Servicing elsewhere keeps the first warranty and forfeits the second.
What is the difference between a service and an MOT? An MOT is a legally required annual inspection confirming the car meets minimum road safety and environmental standards on the day of testing. It inspects but replaces nothing. A service is preventative maintenance carried out to the manufacturer's schedule, replacing oil, filters and wear items. An MOT pass does not mean the car is serviced, and a serviced car still needs an MOT.
How often should I service my Suzuki or Mitsubishi? Mitsubishi's published service interval across the range is 12,500 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Suzuki service intervals vary by model, with the warranty mileage cap set at either 9,000 or 12,500 miles depending on the model's schedule. Check your handbook or ask the service team to look it up against your registration.
How early can I get my MOT done without losing days? Up to one calendar month minus a day before expiry. Test it earlier than that and the new expiry date becomes one year minus a day from the test date, so you lose the remaining time on the old certificate.
What happens if I drive without a valid MOT? You can be fined up to £1,000. The only permitted journeys are to or from a place of repair, or to a pre-arranged MOT test. You also cannot renew your vehicle tax while the MOT has expired.
Can I still get my older Mitsubishi serviced in Kent? Yes. Mitsubishi's Three Diamond Service is designed specifically for vehicles outside their warranty period and covers four levels, oil and filter, interim, full and major, using Mitsubishi-trained technicians and genuine parts. Humphries & Parks is an authorised Mitsubishi service agent.
Can I spread the cost of a service or MOT? Yes. Suzuki dealers offer interest-free finance covering service and MOT work, repairs, parts and accessories, and Suzuki Service Plans fix parts and labour prices for the term. Mitsubishi service plans are available from around £10 a month. Ask the service department which options apply to your vehicle.
Do I need a main dealer service history to sell my car? You do not need one, but it demonstrably helps. A full manufacturer service history is verifiable evidence of maintenance and is one of the factors that moves a part exchange or valuation figure. If you are planning to sell within a couple of years, the cost gap between franchise and independent servicing is usually narrower than it looks once resale value is counted.
